Core, Downtown San Diego
The Core District is located in the middle of Downtown San Diego. It is home to the Civic Center, City Hall, and Central Government. The Core District has a concentration of retail and office buildings. The Gaslamp, East Village, Cortez Hill, and the Columbia District surround this busy neighborhood. A revival and renewal of historical buildings for residential growth of retail and commercial buildings is gradually developing here as well.
Alonzo Horton, who also bought land in the Gaslamp District, thought it would be a great opportunity to use the Core District as home for retail and hotels. This path was well paved in the 1860s and a lot of history can be found in this bustling neighborhood. Current and future projects include the Civic Center Complex Project, Horton Plaza Park, C-Street Trolley Improvement, and the World Trade Center Project.
Unlike the other six neighborhoods in Downtown San Diego, the Core District is unique in that it does not have height restrictions. As a result, expect to see some of the tallest buildings downtown has to offer only being built in the Core District.
