Gaslamp, Downtown San Diego
The Gaslamp is the most well-known neighborhood of Downtown San Diego. Gaslamp Condos, Lofts and Penthouses are located in the neighborhood where the most active nightlife occurs. It borders Marina, East Village, the Columbia District and the Core District. Gaslamp Lofts and Condos can be found in Gaslamp City Square, Crown Bay and Trellis. It is here that many of the Downtown San Diego festivities and events take place. Some of the most well-known are Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, Street Scene Music Festival, ShamROCK, and Taste of Gaslamp.
The Gaslamp is a historic neighborhood that has been named “Gaslamp Quarter Historic District” by the National Register of Historic Places. Its development started back in the 1860s when Alonzo Horton purchased a piece of land and had the intention of creating a city close to the bay. It’s name was drawn from the gas lamps that originally lined the streets. The Gaslamp was well positioned for urban renewal in the 1980s and 1990s as interest in preserving the historic neighborhood increased. In 1985, the Horton Plaza shopping center opened up, the first sign of substantial redevelopment. Today, the Gaslamp is a dynamic business district.
Gaslamp Condos and Gaslamp Lofts are represented by the location when it comes to price per square foot even though several new retail, commercial, and residential projects are planned. Some new development plans Civic San Diego is currently entertaining are the Horton Plaza Expansion, the Gaslamp Square Park, and Balboa Theatre Build Out.
